Volunteer Workday at Historic Mine Run Battlefield

Volunteer workday at Historic Mine Run Battlefield

August 13th and September 13th, 2024 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM Mine Run Battlefield

Join us and American Battlefield Trust!

Goal: Help restore critical bird and pollinator habitat, manage the sea of invasive plants, and work with Civil War history buffs at a historic Civil War Battlefield in Orange County VA.

We will train and supervise volunteers on safe and effective methods for controlling invasive shrubs, and vines such as lespedeza, multiflora rose, autumn olive and Japanese honeysuckle. Eventually, we will seed the riparian areas and edges with native wildflowers and trees.

Agenda:

9-10am: Introductions, safety chat & ‘how to’ training

10am-12:30pm: Volunteer work

12:30-1:00pm: Lunch break

1:00-2:00pm: Optional post-lunch work/Activities wrap-up

Where:

Mine Run Battlefield 31391 Zoar Rd Locust Grove, VA 22508

Parking is available onsite. Look for the signs at the entrance to the park. What to bring: We are working outside: please dress for the weather and be prepared to hike around in tall grass and woods. Wear long pants, long-sleeve shirts and closed toe shoes, preferably rugged gear that can stand up to working in the weeds. Ring lunch and plenty of water, sun protections and bug spray

NOTE: You may be working with herbicides and sharp tools. Personal protective equipment will be provided. However, if you have work gloves and/or eye protection, please bring them.
