Pvt Asbury Morgan Kimbrough, Sr, 47th AL Infantry

2nd great grandfather of Neil Roed

Asbury Morgan Kimbrough was born 22 July 1824 in Greene Co, Georgia to Bradley Kimbrough and Martha Winfield Kimbrough.  Little is known of Asbury ‘s upbringing except that by 1853, he was in Alabama.

On June 30, 1853 Asbury married Nancy A. Willingham in Coosa County, Alabama. As of the 1860 Federal Census, the couple was residing in the Western division, Tallapoosa County, Alabama. The census record reflects three children.   Eventually the couple would have 6 children – Cordera Udorah, Alban Eugene, Ophelia B, George Alfred, Corrilla Josephine, and Ashley Morgan, Jr, (born in Sept 1864 after his father’s death).

On May 1, 1862 Asbury enlisted as a Private and was mustered into Company “C” of the 47th AL Infantry Regiment for 2 years.

The unit completed its organization at Loachapoka, Alabama in May and moved to Virginia the following month. In Virginia the Regiment was assigned to Generals Taliaferro, Law, and W. F. Perry Brigades, Army of Northern Virginia. The 47th fought in many battles of the army from Cedar Mountain to Cold Harbor including the Battle of the Wilderness, May 6-7th, 1864.

By the time of the Battle of Wilderness, the Regiment was assigned to Law’s Brigade, Field’s Division, and Longstreet’s 1st Corps. CSA.  Confederate records show that the Regiment lost 111 men during the latter battle, including Pvt Kimbrough, on 6 May 1864 during the fierce fighting along Orange Plank Road just north of the current Hill-Ewell Drive.

His body is probably one of many removed from the battlefield and moved to the Confederate Cemetery in Fredericksbug, VA.
