Pvt Andrew Jackson Bovee

2nd Great Grandfather of Richard John Fronek

Andrew Jackson Bovee was born July 24, 1845/8 at Madison County, New York. He was the son of Henry and Lucy E. Bovee. By the time of the enumerating of the 1850 Federal Census, the family was residing at Lenox, Lenox County, New York.

By 1860 the Bovee family was residing at Stockbridge, Calumet County, Wisconsin where Henry was recorded as a farmer. Andrew was one of four children at that time.

On February 17th, 1864, Andrew enlisted and was immediately mustered into Company I, 5th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. He was next positioned at Brandy Station, Virginia. On May 4th, the 3rd Brigade, 1st Division, 6th Corps was ordered to move towards Richmond via the Germanna Ford on the Rapidan River. After crossing the river, on the 5th of May, the 6th was ordered to deploy along the Germanna Plank Road (to the right of the 5th Corps and ahead of the 9th Corps). There, they met and fought the 3rd Confederate Corps. Andrew was wounded that day and taken back to the Corps Hospital.

Andrew survived his wound and fought with the 5th through the Battle of the Crater. Following that, the 3-year veterans in the regiment were sent home and the Regiment was re-constituted as a 3 company Battalion. Henry was intra-regimentally transferred to Company B. In September, 7 more companies were recruited and when they were mustered into the 5th, it returned to Regimental status.

The 5th fought at various locations in Virginia until April, 1865. Upon Lee’s surrender the 5th marched back to Washington. The 6th Corps was review there on June 8. Three Companies were mustered out June 24th and the remainder on July 11th, 1865.

On February 11, 1877, Andrew married Sophia Bruggette at Union, Waupaca County, Wisconsin. Sophia (previously married) brought several children to the marriage. Three years later they were living at Manawa, Waupaca County. By 1890 they had relocated to Ackley, Langlade County and as of the 1900 Census, they were located at Upham, Langlade County. Five years later, they were residing at Peck, Langlade County.

Andrew Jackson Bovee died on October 14, 1912 in Goshen, Whatcom Co, Washington State, USA. He is buried in the Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery in Whatcom Co.
