Private Joseph C Taylor 4th Great Grandfather of Glenn E Chappell
Pvt Joseph Taylor was born about 1829 probably in Marion County, South Carolina. His parents were Charles and Martha Taylor. Joseph was the oldest of three boys in the family, a farming family.
Joseph married Lucinda Roberts in Marion County, South Carolina, in 1851, and a daughter, Adeline, was born 9 September 1852. Lucinda passed away in 1854. On 21 March 1855, Joseph married Penelope Roberts, a sister of Lucinda. As of the 1860 Federal Census they were living in Marion County, South Carolina.
Soon after the war began, Joseph’s brothers Noel Aquilla and David Taylor enlisted into Company E, 1st South Carolina Provisional Infantry Regiment (McCreary’s Rifles). The boys were recruited by Captain W. P. Shooter, commander of Company E. Joseph, the oldest brother, stayed behind with the family during the 1861 harvest season but joined up with his brothers’ regiment enlisted on April 10th, 1862 in Goldsboro, North Carolina the next spring,
before the start of the 1862 campaign. The reunited Taylor brothers soon marched north with their regiment to join the Army of Northern Virginia prior to the Second Battle of Manassas.
The 1st South Carolina participated in all of the major battles conducted by the Army of Northern Virginia. Aquilla died at the 2nd Manassas in August of 1862. Muster records show that Joseph was admitted to Chimborazo Hospital in Richmond in August 1862 for a few weeks due to illness, and later to Howard’s Grove Hospital in June of 1863; it is likely that he was wounded during the Battle of Chancellorsville the previous month.
The 1st found itself assigned to McGowan’s Brigade, Wilcox’s Division, Hill’s 3rd Army Corps of the ANV 5 May 1864. Joseph and his younger brother David died on 5 May 1864. The 1st SC Infantry Regiment was deployed along the right side of the Orange Plank Road that fateful afternoon. Sadly, muster records indicate he had not been paid since December 1863.
