Corporal David Taylor

Corporal David Taylor is the 4th Great Granduncle of Glenn E Chappell

Pvt David Taylor was born about 1838 in Marion County, South Carolina. His parents were Charles and Martha Taylor. David was the youngest of three boys in the family, a farming family.

David enlisted on 12 August 1861 at Marion Co, SC and was mustered into Company E, 1st South Carolina Provisional Infantry Regiment (McCreary’s Rifles). David’s brothers Joseph and Noel Aquilla Taylor were also members of the same regiment. Aquilla had enlisted earlier in SC, and Joseph enlisted later in NC. All three boys were recruited by Capt W. P. Shooter, commander of Company E.

The 1st South Carolina participated in all of the major battles conducted by the Army of Northern Virginia.  Aquilla died at the 2nd Manassas in August of 1862.  Muster records indicate that he was hospitalized in November 1862, and that he was captured 2 December 1862 and returned 4 December 1862, both near Winchester, VA.  David was promoted from Private to Corporal in April 1864.

The 1st found itself assigned to McGowan’s Brigade, Wilcox’s Division, Hill’s 3rd Army Corps of the ANV 5 May 1864. David and his older brother Joseph died on 5 May 1864. The 1st SC Infantry Regiment was deployed along the right side of the Orange Plank Road that fateful afternoon.  Sadly, muster records indicate he had not been paid since December 1863. He got to reap the perks of the promotion for only 2 weeks.
